Tears of the Kingdom: Everything We Know from The Legend of Zelda

2023-06-19  Uziel Udayle

The release of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, which most people call The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2, is now less than a year away, assuming Nintendo doesn't have another delay planned. Despite having a name, a few brief trailers, and a release date, little is known about the game's plot or how it fits into the overall Legend of Zelda timeline, though there is plenty of speculation.

launch date
Nintendo revealed the release date for the follow-up to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild at E3 2021. But afterwards, it was changed to the spring of 2023. The development team disclosed the game's official release date at the Nintendo Direct on September 13, 2022: May 12, 2023.

The sequel to Breath of the Wild will only be available on Switch, unlike the first, which was launched simultaneously on Switch and Wii U. Since the original Switch was infamous for having frame rate problems in some sections, many fans undoubtedly thought the reported Switch Pro would be available by the time the game was released. However, there has been no word on the status of the supposedly improved Switch model as of yet.

During its E3 2019 presentation, Nintendo unveiled the first trailer for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (then known as Breath of the Wild 2). The strange film depicts Link and Zelda as they travel through an enigmatic underground cavern (noticeably with shorter hair). Darkness can be observed spreading through the cavern as the two explore it. After some time, Link and Zelda discover what seems to be the cause of the darkness: a body of a man who has been mummified and is wearing Gerudo jewellery and clothing, most likely Ganondorf.
What looks like a hand of light is holding the corpse's chest. Following this, a series of quick, erratically sequenced scenes show Link removing the hand, the floor around him and Zelda collapsing, the enigmatic hand of light catching Zelda as she falls, and the body seemingly coming to life. The final scene of the trailer shows Hyrule Castle starting to ascend into the sky.

During its E3 2021 presentation, Nintendo gave fans another peek at the Breath of the Wild sequel. The range of places you'll be able to visit was further widened by the trailer's confirmation that you'll be able to traverse Hyrule and the skies above. Other hints about the highly anticipated sequel may be seen in the trailer down below, including numerous nuggets of story and gameplay elements. Take a look for yourself, then begin speculating. In our comprehensive assessment of the clip, we've already started accumulating the features we anticipate the game to contain.
Why is a Breath of the Wild sequel being developed by Nintendo? Nintendo is creating a straight sequel to Breath of the Wild, claims Aonuma since it had "too many ideas" for game DLC. As stated by Aonuma during E3 2019:

When we released the DLC for Breath of the Wild, we realized this is a great way to add more elements to the same world. However, technically speaking, DLC is pretty much data—you're adding data to an already existing title. Therefore, when we wanted to add more significant changes, DLC was not enough, and that's why we thought maybe a sequel would be a good fit.
Courtney predicted that playing the fall of Ganondorf, which starts the cycle of a hero facing a corrupted Ganon in every game, would be a vital aspect of the game. He believes that Ganondorf is the hero from 10,000 years ago that has been alluded to and that Link is not the character with the corrupted arm in the trailer, but rather Ganondorf.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild's World First 100% Speedrun Was Completed in 49 Hours

To end the cycle started by Demise, Courtney writes, "this game will entail learning about the fall of Ganondorf the man and then saving him from the evil that has been ruling over him for generations." Of course, Demise is the Gannon that appears in Skyward Sword, making the game's current remake quite topical and giving this idea more support.
